ME & RUMI: The Story of Shams-i Tabrizi

Monday, December 6, 7 pm, $10

When Rumi's beloved friend and teacher Shams-i Tabrizi suddenly disappeared, Rumi was thrown into turmoil and was soon transformed into the world's greatest poet of love. Ever since Shams' disappearance, people have speculated about what happened to him. William Chittick will discuss a number of passages from his new book, Me and Rumi: The Autobiography of Shams-i Tabrizi, which is the first English translation from the Persian of a large percentage of Shams' "Discourses." These are his conversations with Rumi that were recorded by members of Rumi's circle, but published only fifteen years ago.

William C. Chittick has a Ph.D. in Persian literature from Tehran University and is professor of religious studies in the department of Asian and Asian-American Studies at Stony Brook University. He is author and translator of 20 books and 100 articles on Sufism, Shi'ism, and Islamic thought. His more recent work includes The Self-Disclosure of God: Principles of Ibn al-`Arab"'s Cosmology; Sufism: A Short Introduction; The Heart of Islamic Philosophy and Meccan Revelations, volumes I & II (Pir Press).
